Catch the excitement at Nevsky Prospect, a street bustling with activity and dotted with famous monuments including the impressive Kazan Cathedral and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Admire the best of Russian architecture in the Palace Square housing the opulent Winter Palace.

No visit to St. Petersburg can be complete without a visit to the Hermitage Museum. One of the most prominent art museums in the world and definitely the main tourist attraction of St Petersburg.

    Itinerary

The tour picks you up from your hotel in the city.

The tour takes you first on an orientation of the historic centre of St. Petersburg. Often referred to as an outdoor museum of Architecture, this area is listed as a World Heritage Site. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Neva River, Canal Griboyedova, Moika canal, the many bridges connecting the city islands, the Old Holland area of the city and trips to the 2 main islands of Petrogradsky and Vasilevsky.

After the city orientation tour, proceed to the Nevsky Prospect. This is the city’s famous boulevard. Adorned with beautiful buildings, squares and bridges, the Nevsky Prospect is today the very center of the city. See the impressive Kazan Cathedral and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Enjoy the wonderful view of Kanal Griboedova and the picturesque Russian-style Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood.

Just a stone's throw from the Nevsky Prospect is the Arts Square and the Russian Museum. Also worth seeing are the Russian National Library (the second largest branch in the country), an impressive monument to Catherine the Great and the Anichkov Bridge, adorned with 4 striking equestrian statues.

Nevsky Prospect is also the city’s central shopping street and the hub of the city’s entertainment and nightlife.

Continue to Palace Square, the city’s main square, which houses the Baroque Winter Palace (built in 1754-62). The most famous building of imperial St. Petersburg, the palace served as the residence of the Tsars and the backdrop for the 1905 and 1917 Revolutions. The Winter Palace, with its opulent baroque facade, stretching two hundred meters, is undoubtedly the most famous building of the square and it houses the Hermitage, the world's largest museum of art.

End your day with a visit to The Hermitage Museum. Along with the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London and the Prado in Madrid, the Hermitage ranks as one of the world’s largest and greatest collections of art. The date of its foundation is considered to be 1764, the year when Catherine II purchased 225 paintings from the merchant Gotzkowski. Today, the collection numbers over 3 million items among them the works of art of prehistoric culture, Egyptian art, Antiquities, Scythian gold, great collections of Western European paintings and sculptures (from Picasso to Rembrandt). The museum’s architecture will also impress with its solemnity and elegance – the museum being housed in the former Winter Palace of the Russian Tsars.

At the end of the tour, you will be returned to your hotel in the city.
