St. Petersburg is one of the most glorious cities of Russia. The city was the creation of Peter the Great and the buildings and monuments in the city aptly reflect the rich splendour of the country. For tourists, St Petersburg offers a plethora of activities. Stroll through the Nevsky Prospect and discover the charms of St. Petersburg’s main shopping street dotted with important monuments and landmarks of the city including the impressive Kazan Cathedral and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. No visit to St. Petersburg can be complete without seeing the Palace Square, dominated by the winter residence of the tsars, the square served as the political backdrop for the 1905 and 1917 Russian Revolutions. While in St Petersburg, do visit the Peter and Paul Fortress. The fortress was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Besides the ancient fortifications, it includes the Peter and Paul Cathedral, built in the early 18th century. The cathedral houses the burial vault of Peter the Great and other Russian Tsars, the museum of Trubetskoy and the Bastion prison. Another highlight of the city is the splendid St Isaac’s Cathedral, whose majestic dome dominates the skyline of St. Petersburg and whose gilded cupola can be seen glistening from all over the city.
