Leaving behind the bustle of the City, take a stroll in the serene atmosphere of a redwood forest. Gaze up at the mighty trees and breathe the fresh resiny air.
Then head for the rural charm of Sonoma County, where lovely valleys striped with vineyards supply fine quality wines to a grateful world. And of course you will get plenty of opportunity to taste the products and learn more about the industry.
In the evening, kick back by the courtyard pool at your excellent hotel with a bottle of superb Sonoma Valley wine. Toast the pleasures of life, secure in the knowledge that you have another idyllic day ahead.
Day 1: San Francisco – Sonoma Valley
This wine lover's tour begins with a hotel pickup between 08:00am and 09:00am. A quick stop in the Presidio provides a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and a chance to learn about the history of this iconic landmark (fog permitting). After crossing the Golden Gate we head into the Marin Headlands to the Muir Woods National Monument.
Muir Woods is one of the last old growth coastal redwood forests in the San Francisco Bay Area. The marine layer fog provides the cool, moist environment that supports an amazing abundance of plant and animal life, from the coastal redwood to the slimy banana slug. After an hour and a half in this tranquil preserve, we make a quick detour for an impressive view of the rugged California coastline with San Francisco in the background (once again, fog permitting).
Next we head north into the Sonoma Wine Country to explore the famous wine regions of northern California. The northern California wine country covers an immense area extending from the Pacific Coast to Central Valley in the east and from Marin County in the south, well into Mendocino County in the North.
Wine appellations in the Northern California Wine Country abound with delicious varietals. For example, the Sonoma Valley alone boasts over 30 grape varieties and over 200 independent farmers. The area includes over 300 world-class wineries and tasting rooms, from palatial European-style villas to rustic family-run operations where you are made to feel like a member of the family. On our Redwoods and Wine Hotel Tour you get to live the California wine tasting experience.
In the afternoon you will be dropped off at your accommodations in downtown Sonoma which is located within walking distance of Sonoma Square. Your guide can provide you with suggestions as to restaurants, sights, tasting rooms and local wineries to fill you free time in this renowned wine region.
Day 2: Sonoma Valley – San Francisco
The second day begins whenever you want. You will have the morning to do whatever you choose to fill your time. Taste cheese samples at the Sonoma Jack Cheese Factory, visit the Mission San Francisco de Solano, the northernmost mission in California, or peruse the boutique shops that surround this center of commerce. The choice is entirely up to you. In the afternoon you will meet up with the group for more wine tasting in Southern Sonoma.
The Carneros appellation is ideal for growing chardonnay and pinot noir varietals, and as such is home to no less than three champagne houses. If time permits, a stop for a glass of sparkling wine can easily be integrated into this tour (optional). On the way back we will stop for a late afternoon view of the Golden Gate Bridge, with the city illuminated in the background. The tour will conclude with hotel drop-off at approximately 06:00pm."
Please call the activity operator at least 72 hours prior to start of the tour for reconfirming departure details.
The activity operator reserves the right to modify or cancel tours due to lack of participation, vehicle breakdowns, or weather or road conditions.
