This tour is your chance to discover the art and life of a man who left his indelible mark on Rome. Caravaggio, a master baroque artist spent long periods of time running from the law and the church, experiencing bouts of sickness while creating his masterpieces which would be largely forgotten after his death. Experiencing a painting of Caravaggio’s is often overwhelming, as he had a talent for depicting his subjects in the moment of most intense and realistic drama. This and his exuberant use of light give his paintings a shocking quality that stunned those who commissioned his works and continues to astonish the public today. He cavorted with prostitutes and shady characters, and used them as subjects for even religious paintings. He broke new frontiers in the baroque style, “put the ‘oscuro’ (shadow) in chiaroscuro” and inspired countless young artists of his time. Set out on a quest through the churches and collections of Caravaggio’s most characteristic masterpieces, that portray him at diverse moments of his short-lived life and weave a fascinating story with a tragic end.
