The city of Rome is principally Christian and the Vatican Museums and the famous Christian landmarks of Rome underline this fact. An extensive collection of paintings and sculptures collected and preserved by the Roman Catholic Church are displayed in the Vatican Museums. The history of Rome has many layers to it and the Christian influence is one of the most important. The Christian landmarks are numerous and define ancient Rome and indeed the city as it is today. These landmarks can be seen all over the city and include the Church of St John Lateran (Lateran Palace) and the Holy Staircase. The Christian face of Rome, through its landmarks, monuments, architecture and art, indicate just how central a role religion has played on the history and developments of the city. Among the many movements that Rome has seen, none have been as long-lasting or influential as that of Christianity.
