Overview

This tour is perfect for history, art, and music lovers! One of the best Roman Baroque art museums, the Doria Papmphilj Palace is home to famous works from artists such as Velazquez, Bernini, and Carvaggio.

You'll get a guided tour of the museum and some of Caravaggio's most famous works, along with a detailed explanation of the history and hidden symbolism in the paintings. After, you'll sit down in the Palace's Throne Room to enjoy a concert featuring music from 17th-century composers and period instruments.

Itinerary

Your Sounds and Visions of Caravaggio experience will begin at 11AM at Doria Papmphilj Palace, one of the most prestigious ancient art galleries in Rome. Your package includes both a tour of the museum, and a concert featuring 17th-century music with period instruments.

Caravaggio, or Michelangelo Merisi, is one of the most famous artists of Roman Baroque. Doria Pamphilj Palace houses some of his most famous paintings, such as:

Maddalena Penitente: This painting, also known as Penitent Mary Magdalene, portrays Mary as she repents from her old life, preparing to follow Jesus. Caravaggio was criticised initially for its realism in its portrayal of Mary, uncommon in paintings of the 16th century.

Fuga in Egitto: Also known as Rest on the Flight into Egypt, this painting depicts an angel serenading the Holy family. This is one of Caravaggio's few landscape paintings, and his first large work.

The Palace also displays works of art from other famous artists such as Raffaello, Bernini, and Velazquez. As you explore the Doria Papmphilj Palace, your tour guide will explain the history behind the artwork, and the hidden symbolism of the times.

You will then proceed to the Sala de Trono, or Throne Room, for a concert not unlike the kind Caravaggio would have heard in his time. This concert includes 17th-century composers such as Caccini and Pretorius, and uses instruments modeled after those used in the 17th century for a more authentic sound.
