You will be collected from your hotel or any other pick-up point in Sighisoara by a knowledgeable English-speaking guide and set out on foot towards the heart of the Sighisoara Citadel. German, Italian, Spanish, and French guides are also available on request.
Enjoy a tour that touches on all the must-see attractions of the Citadel. Built by the Saxons during the 12th century, Sighisoara showcases some 850 years of Transylvanian history.
Visit the Clock Tower, a 60-meter tall monolith dating from 1360, which houses a museum and offers a stunning vista over the citadel.
At the foot of the Clock Tower is the Torture Room, a small and eerie museum that details the barbarous methods used to extract confessions from prisoners during the Middle Ages. Some ancient instruments of torture are still on display here.
You can also check out the old swords and crossbows in the Medieval Weapon Collection.
The citadel is also notable for being the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, so named for his preferred method of punishing his enemies. The building has now been turned into a cozy restaurant that features the delicious dishes of the Count, and makes for an excellent lunch option (payable direct).
Board an air-conditioned coach for a transfer to the traditional Saxon village of Biertan. Perched high atop a hill, Biertan is enclosed by two and a half walls that are connected by a splendid covered staircase.
Visit the Fortified Church of Biertan, another UNESCO-listed landmark and the most significant fortified Saxon church in Transylvania. This imposing edifice, which blends Gothic and Renaissance influences, was the seat of the Lutheran bishops until 1867, and their neatly ordered gravestones still rest inside the Bishop’s Tower.
One of the most unique features of the church is a small room akin to a prison where married couples that wanted a divorce were held captive and forced to reconsider their decision. Couples were made to share everything during their time under lock and key and were given only one spoon and one plate. It should hardly be surprising that the village had only one divorce in 500 years.
Return by coach to the medieval citadel of Sighisoara, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation or at a location of your choice in the city.
