Overview

The Imagine Peace Tower is an outdoor work of art on the Island of Viðey, conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. The piece consists of a white stone monument, with the words ‘Imagine Peace’ carved into it in 24 languages, and a tall tower of light that on a clear night reaches an altitude of 4000 metres. The tower was named after Lennon’s famous peace anthem, Imagine. Buried underneath the tower are over half a million written wishes gathered by Ono.

The tower is lit every year from 9th October, Lennon’s birthday, through to 8th December, the date he was shot. Additionally, the tower is lit during a limited number of dates such as spring equinox. Iceland was selected for the project because of its unmatched beauty and use of eco-friendly energy.

Seeing the tower lit up, with a pillar of light slicing through the dark sky, is an evocative experience.
