Lisbon, the capital of Portugal for the past 750 years, is built on seven hills and lies on the right bank of the Tagus River. The castle of Sao Jorge, the Lisbon Cathedral, the historic neighbourhood of Belem with its grand monastery and are among some of the notable landmarks of the city.
The Tagus River, as it winds its way to the Atlantic coast, forms a landscape of green grace that is reflected in the imposing Marfa convent, the Arrabi hills and picturesque towns.
The Beiras region of Central Portugal is one of strange contrasts. Whereas there is an extensive coastline with sandy beaches, the inland area is dominated by mountains and plateaus such as the Estrela mountain range.
