Activity Overview

The long galleries and lofty chambers of the world-famous Glowworm Caves are a popular tourist destination because of their unique inhabitants. Take a boat ride in this underground wonderland along the Waitomo River and marvel at the myriad of glowworm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, experience a serene ambience and be fascinated by tiny glowworms that light your way.

No trip to New Zealand can be complete without a visit to these world-famous Glowworm Caves.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the starting point of the tour, Tourism Rotorua, 1167 Fenton Street, Rotorua. Here, you will board a coach with commentary and travel to Waitomo for a day's sightseeing tour.

Enroute to Waitomo, there will be a stop at Lake Karapiro, for morning tea (own expense).

Arrive at the world-famous Glowworm Caves in Waimoto.

Set out on a a guided tour through the long galleries and lofty chambers of the Glowworm Caves. Your guide will take you through over 250 metres of stunning underground scenery commencing with the impressive Cathedral cavern. The acoustics in this particular cavern are world-renowned. Acclaimed New Zealand Diva, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, has sung here and was delighted with the purity of the sound. From the upper entrance of the cave, proceed along a low narrow passage to the Tomo, a deep limestone shaft. Your tour guide will deliver a highly informative commentary about the formations and the history of the area.

The highlight of your tour is an unrivalled boat trip through the spectacular Glowworm Grotto, illuminated by thousands of tiny lights from the glowworms suspended from the cave ceiling. Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto.

Depart Waitomo.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel.
