Kiwi Encounter within the Rainbow Springs park is a unique working hatchery and rearing facility for visitors to view and educate themselves about kiwi – New Zealand’s rare and endangered national icon. Rainbow Springs has been spearheading efforts to save the kiwi, from extinction. Kiwi Encounter has a fabulous open plan nocturnal area which is home to the adult kiwi. Wonderful educational exhibits and a superb audio visual provide an additional understanding of these unique birds. See the hatchery and nursery where the young chicks are raised by specialist husbandry staff for release back into the wild.
This tour offers you three options: Rainbow Springs National Park (guided 45 minutes’ tour), Kiwi Encounter (guided 45 minutes’ tour) or a combination of Rainbow Springs and Kiwi Encounter (guided two hours’ tour.)
Rainbow Springs Nature Park: Breathe deeply, and take in the native bush, ferns, trees and plants that grow and flower all around you as you wander through the tree lined pathways at Rainbow Springs Nature. Enjoy the tranquility of the crystal clear mineral water that flows continuously from the subterranean springs throughout the park. See magnificent specimens of Rainbow, Brown and Tiger trout and feed them as they cruise the fern-fringed pools. Hear the bustling bush wildlife, and meet the curious species of native birds on display.
Kiwi Encounter: Kiwi Encounter is a working hatchery and nursery where kiwi are hatched and nurtured as part of a New Zealand kiwi conservation program called "Operation Nest Egg". This is a unique conservation centre which gives you the opportunity to see all the kiwi "conservation in action" for the first time in New Zealand. The husbandry area has been set up with big windows so that you can clearly see into the areas where the work is being undertaken.
The tour ends after the guided visit.
