The Whirinaki Rainforest is about 50 kilometers south of Rotorua and is enthralling for the stunning beauty of its towering trees many of which are several hundred years old. Waima-ngu literally means ‘black water’ and it is named for the dark, muddy colour of the water in Waimangu Volcanic Valley. This valley was created in 1886 after the eruption of Mt. Tarawera. Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken in an air-conditioned luxury vehicle for a guided eco tour to the Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Whirinaki Rainforest.

Arrive at the Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Begin your unique experience with a guided walk through this stunning region. Waimangu offers a range of easy ecology-focused walks through the craters of the beautiful Waimangu Volcanic Valley. The walks showcase a wide range of volcanic activity, native plants and bird-life in one of the newest eco-systems in the world. There are a number of easy walks available. In each case, your walk will follow a predominantly downhill path. You can then take one of the courtesy shuttle buses back up the valley to the Waimangu entrance.

Continue your tour with a cruise on Lake Rotomahana amidst a stunning volcanic landscape with spectacular views of hot crater lakes, steaming cliffs, hissing fumeroles and colorful silica terraces.

Proceed towards the Whirinaki Rainforest often described as a 'dinosaur forest, due to its many tall trees which began life hundreds of years ago. It contains species unique to NZ that developed over millions of years. Take a guided walk in this magnificent Rainforest famous for its towering 700 - 800 year old Rimu, Totara, Matai, Miro and Kahikatea - the ancient giants of New Zealand’s podocarp tree species.
