Overview

Spend a day walking one of the world’s finest mountain trails – the magnificent Routeburn Track in Mount Aspiring National Park.

Climb gradually through ancient beech forests draped with mosses and carpeted with ferns, finding new enchantment around each corner. Trace the rushing Routeburn River as it thunders through the rocky gorge it has carved over millennia.

Leaving the forest behind, enjoy a Kiwi-style picnic on the grassy Routeburn Flats with sky-scraping mountain peaks all around you. Admire the jaw-dropping panoramas before returning through the forest along ancient Maori trails.

If you love walking, mountain scenery and wildlife then this is the ideal day out!

Itinerary

The Famous Routeburn Track Full Day Guided Walk takes you through one of the world’s most spectacular wilderness areas.

At the start of the day, you will be collected from your Queenstown hotel. To reach the starting point in the Routeburn Valley you will drive northwest along Lake Wakatipu. As you travel, your guide will introduce you to the history and landscape of the area. Along the way you will catch superb views of snow-capped mountains, rolling alpine meadows and tussock grasslands.

The first part of the Routeburn Track takes you through towering ancient beech trees carpeted with mosses and ferns, a landscape that has changed little in 130 million years. You will skirt the roaring Routeburn River and continue to the edge of the wood.

Emerging from the forest you will be greeted by the rich grassland of Routeburn Flats, overlooked on all sides by soaring mountains,

At the Flats you will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch and then turn and enjoy the valley in reverse, following old Maori trails and looking out for native and migratory birds in the forests.

Due to the nature of the terrain, altitude and alpine conditions, the duration of this walk is flexible and dependent on fitness levels.

At the end of the day you will be dropped back at your hotel in Queenstown.
