Activity Overview

Be transported in style to the Walter Peak High Country Farm, on the western shores of beautiful Lake Wakatipu, aboard the vintage coal-driven steamship TSS Earnslaw.

The TSS Earnslaw is one of the oldest tourist attractions in Central Otago plying the waters of Lake Wakatipu. Every cruise allows you plenty of time to explore the TSS Earnslaw’s decks and bridge, view the engine room and historic displays in the Gallery.

Walter Peak High Country Farm provides visitors with the opportunity to relax and experience New Zealand high country life. Stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens of the historic Colonel's Homestead, watch sheep shearing demonstrations (you can even participate in one!), see sheep dogs working stock and enjoy a freshly-cooked delicious BBQ lunch.

For an ideal family holiday, this excursion to Walter Peak High Country Farm is a must.

Itinerary

The Walter Peak Farm and Barbecue Excursions on board the TSS Earnslaw begins from Steamer Wharf, Queenstown. Please make your own arrangements to reach this place a few minutes prior to departure time.

Set out on a one and a-half hour scenic cruise on board the coal-fired vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw. The cruise will take you from Queenstown Bay to Walter Peak High Country Farm. On board the captain provides an interesting commentary as you enjoy spectacular views of Cecil and Walter Peaks and the western shores of Lake Wakatipu.

The original steam engines can be seen in operation from the open viewing area. Guided tours of the vessel are available and you are welcome to visit the Fo'c'sle Gallery to view the historic displays.

Disembark at Walter Peak High Country Farm.

This farm offers a fascinating glimpse into rural New Zealand. There is time to wander through the beautiful lakeside gardens in the Colonel's Homestead, surrounded by views of the lake and mountains.

The farm demonstrators will take you on a walking tour of the farmyard and there is ample opportunity to view the farm animals - sheep, red deer and Scottish Highland cattle. Highlights of the farming experience are watching the farm demonstrator shear a sheep, and sheep dogs working stock.

Enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch on the farm. The barbecue is freshly prepared and served either on the lakeside terrace or inside the Homestead. Fresh salads and crusty bread perfectly complement the food sizzling on the grill.

After the farmyard tour there is still time to do a little shopping at the souvenir shop and view a wool spinning demonstration, before boarding the TSS Earnslaw for the return cruise to Queenstown.

The tour ends at the Steamer Wharf in Queenstown.
