Experience the jaw-dropping beauty of Mount Cook / Aoraki National Park on an away-day from Christchurch.

View the deep turquoise blue waters of Lake Tekapo and experience the serenity of the Church of the Good Shepherd in its lonely lakeside location.
Enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at the Hermitage Hotel with stunning views of the Mount Cook / Aoraki National Park from the huge picture windows before exploring the great Tasman Glacier and its newly formed lake.
For your thrilling Mount Cook Day Tour from Christchurch you will be picked up from your Christchurch accommodation in the morning at a time pre-arranged with the local isango partner. Your friendly driver/guide will provide an informative commentary during the day.
Leaving Christchurch you will travel by road to Mount Cook / Aoraki - Australasia's highest mountain. The tour makes a short stop at the Tin Shed (an old shearing shed selling discount sweaters) or at Barkers Winery for tasting of fruit wines, sauces and jams.
The next stop will be at Lake Tekapo for morning tea. This lake is famous for the amazing turquoise blue of its waters. The intense colour is caused by the sunlight reflecting off particles of suspended rock dust.
On the lake shore you will see the solitary Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935 to commemorate the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country. Nearby is the bronze statue of a sheepdog, a tribute to the dogs that make the grazing of this mountain country possible. From the Church you can enjoy magnificent panoramas of the spectacular Southern Alps mountain range.
You will continue to Lake Pukaki, where you will see magnificent views of Mount Cook National Park, and then stop for a magnificent buffet lunch at the Hermitage Hotel. (A sample lunch buffet menu is given in the Additional Information section on this website).
After lunch you will drive into the Tasman Glacier where a 20-minute climb by foot will take you to the top of the terminal moraine, with wonderful views of both the Tasman Glacier and the newly formed Lake Tasman.
You will then depart Mount Cook for Christchurch with a stop at the high country town of Fairlie for late afternoon tea. At the end of the day, you will be dropped back at your accommodation in Christchurch.
