Discover a slice of paradise on Earth – the glorious Coromandel Peninsula – on an away-day from Auckland.
This enchanting tour takes you right across the Peninsula, from the bays and coves of the west coast through the magnificent mountains of the interior to the lovely eastern shoreline and back again.
On the way you will ride New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway through a lush forest of kauri and tree ferns and enjoy fabulous views from the “Eyefull Tower” viewpoint at the top.
You’ll be able to explore the Pacific coastline with its blissful beaches, take a dip in a hot spring and see the famous Cathedral Cove where a gigantic arched cavern passes through a white rock headland.
For your Coromandel Peninsula Tour you will be picked up from your hotel in downtown Auckland at around 0700h (07:00am).
The Coromandel Peninsula is a favourite holiday destination for many New Zealanders. Its beautiful landscape consists of a mountainous, forest-covered backbone, with the Pacific Ocean on the east, and the sheltered bays and coves of the Hauraki Gulf on the west.
A 90-minute drive south-east of Auckland is Coromandel's main town, Thames, where you will take a short break. Then the spectacular western coast road leads you to Coromandel township where renowned New Zealand potter, Barry Brickell has his studio.
Your tour includes a ride on the Driving Creek railway, New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway, which Barry designed and built.
The 1-hour return railway trip climbs through replanted native kauri forest to the mountain-top terminus. Wittily known as the “Eyefull Tower”, the terminus offers magnificent views out over the island-studded Hauraki Gulf with the forested valley and mountains behind.
On the next stop you will enjoy a stroll in pristine rainforest to view some of the magnificent kauri trees which once covered the Coromandel Peninsula. The journey continues across the mountain divide and descends towards the east coast beaches where you stop for a Café lunch (with plenty of variety & 1 non-alcoholic drink per person).
Later, you will visit Hot Water Beach with its hot spring in the middle of the beach. Take a dip if you wish!
A short drive away is Cathedral Cove, where the Pacific Ocean washes through a natural arch onto a white sandy beach backed by white cliffs. There is a half-hour downhill walk to the beach from here which means of course the walk back is uphill! The journey home to Auckland heads back over the hills by a different route.
At the end of an exciting day out you will be dropped back at your hotel in Auckland.
