  • Overview & Itinerary

    Overview

Hawaiian legend has it that the demi-god Maui and his grandmother captured the sun from the sprawling crater Haleakala and slowed its movement in hopes to lengthen the time that it shone over their volcanic home. Although today neither Maui nor his diligent grandmother may be seen, the sun still continues to shine brightly at Haleakala, correctly earning its name, “House of the Sun.” You will not regret summiting this volcano and gazing into the deep depression, only a faint remnant of powerful eruptions from centuries ago.

The neighboring P’uu Ulaula elicits some of most gorgeous landscape of the volcano. A quiet stroll around Wailuku town in Central Maui will promise views of rolling hills and sugar plantations. A final drive around the Iao Needle and surrounding state park promises a beautiful panorama of this famous lookout point and burial peaceful ground.

    Itinerary

The tour begins with you being picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned coach. This is a fully narrated tour.

Begin by visiting the towering Haleakala Volcano and knock on the door of this famous “House of the Sun,” and learn about the mythical lore that surrounds it at the adjacent Visitor Center.

Then travel to the P’uu Ulaula Overlook and enjoy some of the best views of the volcano from this “red hill,” and the endangered Silverswords.

Visit the quaint Wailuku town and its sprawling sugar plantation estates.

Enjoy lunch at Casanovas Restaurant (payable direct).

Also tour the 19th century Kaahumanu Church which commemorates the Queen who brought Christianity to the nation.

Finally drive through the Iao Needle and lush surrounding State Park and take in some of the most tropical scenes on U.S. territory.

The tour concludes with you being dropped off at your hotel.
