Haleakala is truly magnificent during the day; its steep slopes bathed in sunlight and endemic wildlife freely roam the landscape. Observe Nene geese in their native habitat and discover the secret of the rare Silversword plant.

Stroll past a meandering stream through a forest bursting with native Hawaiian plant life, gaze high above at the iconic Iao Needle – a natural outcropping jutting from the mountain side. The needle is covered in emerald green vegetation and towers 1,200 feet over Iao valley. Iao Valley is used to be an ancient burial site for Hawaii’s royalty and is steeped in history.

End the day at historic Lahaina Town, a former whaling village and hot spot for both locals and tourists. Browse unique shops and art galleries. Known for its sunny weather and relaxed vibe, Lahaina is the place to be.

 A quiet stroll around Wailuku town in Central Maui will promise views of rolling hills and sugar plantations. A final drive around the Iao Needle and surrounding state park promises a beautiful panorama of this famous lookout point and burial peaceful ground.

Dress for the weather. While at Haleakala summit, the temperature is around 20-40 degrees Fahrenheit, the lower areas will be comparatively warmer.

The visitor centers at 7,000 and 9,744 feet elevation will be closed, although restrooms will remain open.
