Overview

Look at the view, just take a moment to let it all sink in. It’s a sight to see, a photo to take and a memory to be made. This is Provence, a place where perched stone clad villages gaze down upon stunning French landscapes of green and lavender fields of purple.

Discover the picturesque perched villages of Provence, which hold stoic vigil over the verdant valleys and far-flung mountain ranges of Luberon. Visit the charming outpost of Oppède le Vieux, which was saved from extinction by an artists’ commune after World War II.

Tour the quiet streets and ancient citadel of Ménerbes, which was the heart of the Protestant movement during the religious wars of the 16th century. Visit Samuel Beckett’s old stomping grounds in Roussillon, where the sheer red cliffs are a wonder to behold against the piercing blue of a Provencal sky.

Itinerary

Your driver/guide will pick you up in an air-conditioned vehicle for this Sightseeing Tour of the Perched Villages of Luberon. Your guide speaks French and English.

Begin your adventure with a visit to Oppède le Vieux, a medieval village shorn from rock that gives way to thick forest and looks out over the lush hills of Provence. Oppède le Vieux became a ghost town in the 19th century, when its inhabitants abandoned it for the valley below, but the village was revived by a group of artists, writers and sculptors after World War II, who saw its elevated position as an ideal vantage point for lofty thoughts.

Proceed to the fortress village of Ménerbes, admiring its Roman cemetery and lovingly restored stone houses. Lunch in beguiling Bonnieux (payable direct), which boasts a 12th century church in its town center and recedes to a cedar forest.

Red cliffs, ochre quarries, and proud pines will ignite your imagination in Roussillon, where Nicolas de Staël and Pablo Picasso used to retreat for inspiration.

Explore the wonder of Gordes, where white and gray stones houses spiral around the rocky center. For a unique finish, visit a village of bories, which are stacked-stone houses redolent of igloos, and were built in Gordes around the 13th century. Finally, you will end this itinerary by an unexpected drive up to the cistercian abbey of Senanque, surrounded by lavender fields.

Your driver will drop you back at your pick up point in Marseille at tour’s end.
