Key Highlights

  • Learn about the communal society of the Bidayuh tribe
  • Relax in a traditional longhouse, which has sheltered Malaysia's native tribes for centuries

Overview

The Bidayuhs, formerly known as the Land Dayaks during the era of the Brookes' and British colonial rule, constitute the second largest of the 25 native tribes of Sarawak. Anah Rais is a large Bidayuh village and is one of the many longhouses that dot the Sarawak landscape. For the urban dweller, the longhouse offers a fascinating glimpse into how the natives in Malaysia continue to live.

Many families live under one roof and follow a traditional and communal way of life which is still largely untouched by modern civilization. Located about 100 kilometres from Kuching and quite close to the Indonesian border, the longhouse comprises 100 doors or families. Situated on a hillside next to a clear stream, Ana Rais is a popular destination because of its scenic surroundings and its size, which is large even by Sarawak's standard. Enjoy the warm hospitality of the friendly natives.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in Kuching and taken for an exciting half day tour to a Bidayuh longhouse to experience the uniquely traditional life of Malaysia’s native tribes.

The two-hour drive will take you through the lush and scenic countryside, through rubber trees and paddy fields to Anah Rais before arriving at a Bidayuh Longhouse, nestled on the edge of the rainforest. You will be introduced to the many families from the same tribe who live together in the longhouse, sharing a long outer communal room and open verandah made largely of bamboo where daily household chores are jointly done. Artistic bamboo carvings adorn most of the interior of the longhouse.

After this, you will see traditional farming techniques and learn more about the farming lifestyle of the Bidayuh people.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Kuching.
