An excursion to Madrid is incomplete without a trip to El Escorial and the basilica of Valle de Los Caidos. El Escorial owes it universal fame to the monastery built by King Felipe II. Marvel at the San Lorenzo el Real monastery which exudes an aura of grandeur and austerity. The symmetry and balance of the construction according to the humanist Renaissance style makes it popular as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. At Valle de Los Caidos, you will see an unmistakable granite cross, 150 metres high and 46 metres long at the cross piece, dominating the landscape. Explore the beautiful imperial city-museum of Toledo popularly known as the ‘city of the three cultures’. Its genuine Spanish buildings include almost all the periods in the history (Arab, gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance and baroque style). Here lived the great painter El Greco in the 16th century.
