For your delightful Eagles Nest Castles Tour from Krakow you will be picked up from your hotel reception desk in the lobby of your hotel in Krakow at the time arranged with the local activity operator. Alternatively you can join the tour at 2 Swietego Jana Street.

You’ll travel in a car or a minibus (depending on the size of your party) through the lovely rolling scenery of south-west Poland. The tour follows the route of the famous Trail of the Eagles' Nests, a hiking trail named after a chain of 25 medieval castles strung along a route between Czestochowa and Krakow. The tour will involve 3 hours driving and 5 hours exploration on foot, so do be sure you are wearing comfortable shoes.

Perched on tall limestone crags, the Eagles Nest castles date mostly from the 14th century. They were constructed by King Casimir III the Great to protect what at the time was Poland’s western frontier. Later, the buildings passed into the hands of various Polish aristocratic families and many of them are now picturesque ruins.

You will see the castles and watchtowers that made up King Casimir’s line of defence against invaders and learn the stories and legends surrounding them.

The tour will include entrance to three of the most interesting fortresses: Ojcow, Pieskowa Skala and Ogrodzieniec.

Ojcow Castle: A ruined Gothic castle towering over the Pradnik Valley. Points of interest include a medieval gate housing a local museum, an octagonal stone tower and the ruins of the chapel.

Pieskowa Skala: This beautiful castle dates back to the mid 14th century. In the 16th century it was renovated in the style of the north-Italian Renaissance. Since 1970 it has been home to a European art museum, a branch of Krakow’s Wawel Royal Castle.

Ogrodzieniec Castle: This splendid edifice stands among dramatic limestone crags on a high point (504 m) of the Krakow upland and affords breath-taking views. In 1545 the king’s mid-14th-century fortress was replaced by the grand Renaissance castle-palace of Krakow’s powerful Boner family. The castle was abandoned in 1810, but many of its fortifications, towers, and other features still can be seen.

At the end of the tour you will be driven back to Krakow and dropped at your hotel or at 2 Swietego Jana Street.
