Overview

On this sightseeing tour from Sorrento, travel to two of the most significant historical sites in Italy: Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.

Pompeii is one of Italy’s most precious archeological sites and is incredibly well preserved. The ancient city of Pompeii was suddenly wiped off the map in 79 A.D.; buried under 6 meters of volcanic ash. Although most of the 20,000 inhabitants didn’t survive, much of their city did. This UNESCO World Heritage site has been carefully excavated to reveal its former glory. There are even colored frescos depicting the people who once lived there. Paved, streets, murals, and well preserved structures all give a glimpse back into an era long gone.

Also on this tour is Mount Vesuvius, the volcano responsible for covering Pompeii in ashes. Seeing Vesuvius offers a well rounded experience after visiting Pompeii. This volcano is the only active volcano of its kind in Europe. Enjoy the views of Pompeii at the top, and be sure to take some snaps here to remember the day!

Stroll down the streets grooved deeply from the chariot wheels, have a look at the amazing mosaics and murals and walk around the public baths. At the time of Pompeii’s height, the rest of Europe was still living in mud-huts and the Romans were enjoying central heating and saunas.

Next you’ll be taken to Mount Vesuvius. The ride from Pompeii to Vesuvius is approximately 30 minutes, and you’ll have 3 hours in Vesuvius. Vesuvius is an active volcano, the only active volcano in Europe at this time. It’s been about a hundred years since its last eruption. Vesuvius is steeped in history as it was this volcano that covered Pompeii in ashes in 79 A.D. There is a spectacular view of Pompeii from Vesuvius.

You will be taken back to your hotel/cruise ship in Sorrento, where your tour ends.
