Get to know a different side of ancient Rome on this tour. Visit some of the underground churches and Catacombs which were built to honour the dead. This is a small group tour and the limited numbers make for an intimate experience and ensure everyone has a chance to interact with the guide.

This fascinating tour of Rome's original Catacombs provides an interesting insight into the role that they played during the times of religious persecution. Travel to the outskirts of Rome to enjoy a short stroll along the Ancient Appian Way, once the major road to Rome. Whilst here visit the Catacombs of San Sebastiano. Return to Rome and visit the gruesome and bizarre art created out of the bones of dead monks. This fascinating underground tour shows you a very different side of Rome.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from cafe on the right as you enter the Colosseum underground metropolitan station. You will travel in an air-conditioned vehicle accompanied by an English-speaking guide. On this tour you will visit:

• Catacombs of Rome: The catacombs were the ancient underground cemeteries used by the Christian and Jewish communities to bury their dead and celebrate the funeral rites and the anniversaries of the martyrs.

• The Appian Way: Considered to be the queen of long roads, the Appian Way is a symbol of the Republic, bringing order to Italy and peace and freedom to its people.

• Church of St. Clement's: The medieval church was built over the remains of a 4th century basilica which at its turn covers older buildings from the time of the emperor Nero.

The tour finishes at St Clemente Church.
