• Pisa Cathedral (Duomo): this medieval cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (St Mary of the Assumption) is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture.
• The Baptistry: located near the Cathedral, this is the largest Baptistry in Italy. Constructed in marble, it shows an example of the transition from the Romanesque style to the Gothic.
• Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles): this wide walled area contains the Duomo, The Leaning Tower and the Baptistry. It is recognized as one of the main centers for medieval art in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Piazza dei Cavalieri (The Knights’ Square): the political center of medieval Pisa. In the 16th century, the palace in the square became the headquarters of the Knights of St Stephen, whose role was to repel raids by the Turks. The elegant piazza now contains part of the University of Pisa.
• Piazza delle Vettovaglie: this attractive arcaded piazza was built in the 16th century in the heart of the old medieval town. Originally a grain market, it is now a lively place where Pisans go to buy fruit and vegetables.
• Across the Arno: as you cross the Arno River you will see some splendid old buildings along the bank and catch lovely views of the city against a backdrop of the Tuscan hills.
• San Sepolcro: This mysterious church was built it for the Knights Templar in what was thought to be the shape of Christ's sepulcher.
• San Paolo a Ripa d'Arno (St Paul on Arno's Bank): this beautiful old church was founded in 925 AD and is one of the finest Romanesque churches in Tuscany.
• Santa Maria della Spina: This church is an exquisite example of Italian Gothic art and was originally known as “Santa Maria de Pontenovo”. It was renamed in 1333, when a thorn of Christ's crown (brought from the Holy Land by a Pisan merchant) was placed inside. ‘Spina’ means ‘thorn’.
