The mood is set as the tour gets underway at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. What better start for the tour than this bustling railway station that is a brilliant specimen of Victorian Gothic architecture, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
You’ll see the Gateway of India, that marvelous arch built for a king and standing in glory against a backdrop of sea, fishing boats and yachts. From there, a quick drive along picturesque Marine Drive takes you to a Shiva temple that draws the devout. You’ll also see Haji Ali, the remarkable 14th century mosque that is built 500 yards into the Arabian Sea and is reachable only by a narrow walkway.
Every city has its dirty laundry and we’ll tell you stories of Mumbai’s turbulent history. Then we’ll show you how this ultra modern city literally keeps its clothes clean by visiting the unforgettable Dhobi Ghat. You’ll never take laundry for granted again once you see hundreds of men washing and starching clothes by hand!
The Mumbai Highlights Tour introduces you to the some of the iconic sights of the vibrant, bustling and always fascinating Mumbai.
The adventure begins when you make your way to the Outside the entrance of McDonald's Family Restaurant opposite Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mahendra Chambers, Fort, Mumbai 400 001. We’ll tour this bustling railway station that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Next we take a short taxi (or bus) ride through vintage neighborhoods with beautiful Indo- Victorian buildings and monuments that are a throwback to an era of dapper English Sahibs and elegant Memsahibs. We’ll see the impressive Gateway of India, a monument built for a King, standing in full glory against the blue sea dotted with colorful fishing boats, yachts and an occasional cargo ship.
From the Gateway, we take a breezy ride along iconic Marine Drive to the base of a 200 year old Shiva temple, Babulnath. Devout Hindus can be seen carrying milk and water to pour over the creative symbol that denotes Lord Shiva.
Underlining that fact that India is a potpourri of religions, a short ride from Babulnath takes us to the heart of Muslim piety, Haji Ali. One of a kind, this 14th century mosque was built 500 yards into the Arabian Sea.
Splashes of color and smells that are distinct to Mumbai greet you when you reach the unique Dhobi Ghat. The sight and sound of a multitude of clothes being washed together has never been as appealing as at this launderer's nook. We’ll get a step by step account of how tons of clothes are washed, starched, ironed and returned daily, using a traditional tracking system that is almost foolproof.
Dhobi Ghat is the last stop on the tour. From here, you will be taken to the Mahalakshmi Railway station. You will need to make your own arrangements to get back to your accommodation.
