• The Taj Mahal: This is a symbol of eternal love and an enduring icon of India. This mausoleum of white marble was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Considered one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture, the Taj Mahal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
• The Agra Fort: A massive red-sandstone monument built by the Mughals. There are a number of mosques and palaces inside the fort which are impressive examples of Mughal architecture. See the Diwan-i-Aam (The Hall of Public Audiences) where Shah Jehan met officials and commoners and listened to the petitioners. Don’t miss the Musamman Burj where Shah Jehan spent his last later years as a captive of his son, gazing at the Taj Mahal.
