From history, to religion to art; discover the treasures of the Eternal City

Ancient and Historic Rome

From Christianity to the Roman Empire;
discover the cultures that shaped Rome

Historic Rome

Historic Rome is not found behind the closed doors of museums and art galleries but on the streets of the city. Many of the landmarks of Ancient Rome have been beautifully preserved and Rome is truly a living breathing museum waiting to be explored; from the first settlement on the Palantine Hill to the iconic landmarks of the Roman Empire to the statues and frescoes of the Renaissance movement which are scattered across Ancient Rome.

Ancient Rome and the legacy of the Roman Empire perhaps had the biggest impact on the historic Rome landscape. The landmarks of this era are not just architectural marvels but have a fascinating history.

The Colosseum

The mighty Colosseum witnessed bloody battles between gladiators, the Pantheon which started as a place of worship and is now a mausoleum for some of Historic Rome’s greatest artists and Castel St Angelo which has over the years been a castle, a museum and but perhaps is best known as Emperor Hadrian’s resting place. Of all these the Colosseum is perhaps the most popular attraction of Ancient Rome and queues are long throughout the year. Don’t waste precious time during your Rome city break pre-book an ancient Rome tour which includes Colosseum tickets.

Renaissance Rome

If the Roman Empire laid the foundations of historic Rome the Renaissance movement added the finishing touches. Michelangelo’s Dome (atop St Peter’s Basilica), the exquisite Sistine Chapel and the Trevi Fountain are probably some of the best-known remnants of this era. However look deeper and you will find the streets of ancient Rome awash with cloisters, frescoes and obelisks left behind by the renaissance masters.

And if your appetite for history is so insatiable that you manage to exhaust all the historical treasures of the Rome, one of the most popular day trips from Rome will take you to the ancient city of Pompeii. Pompeii was destroyed in 79AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted covering the city with lava. The day to day lives of the people of this town were frozen in time and a visit to Pompeii provides a unique insight into life during Roman times.
