Get acquainted with the arresting scenery and deep religious history of Thassos Island.
Journey to the mountain village of Panagia, built in a gorge on the side of a mountain so as to be invisible to the pirates that once roamed the surrounding seas. Tour a beautiful domed basilica with marble walls and a revered icon of the Virgin Mary.
Venture to the peninsula of Aliki and explore the Byzantine churches that look out over the water.
Step inside an imposing monastery that seems shielded from time and see the venerable Mount Athos loom on the horizon.
Your Thassos sightseeing tour begins at Alexandra Beach in Thassos.
An air-conditioned coach will take you to Panagia, a quaint mountain village surrounded by walnut trees and natural spring waters. Tour the historic church of the Virgin Mary and appreciate the measured rhythm of a place that has faithfully preserved its customs and traditions. Even King Richards’s crusade banner is on display.
Continue to the picturesque Aliki Peninsula, which is embraced by two stunning natural bays. Some of antiquity’s finest marble originated in the quarries of Alkiki, though the quarry bottom was buried beneath the sea by an ancient earthquake.
Explore the ruins of a sanctuary from the 7th century BC and walk through early Byzantine churches overlooking the beaches of Aliki.
Enter the self-sufficient monastery of the Archangel Michael, which affords a breathtaking view of the Aegean and an atmosphere of the ancients.
On a clear day you can see Mount Athos, the most sacred mountain in the Greek Orthodox world and a beacon for photographers.
You will be returned to Alexandra Beach at tour’s end.
