Drive along the docks of Avignon, the City of the Popes, with your attention divided between the Rhone River on one side and the city’s former medieval ramparts on the other. Walk along the remains of the Saint Benezet Bridge, which was single-handedly built by a shepherd boy in 1177 after he was commanded to do so during a religious vision.
Enter the Palace of the Popes, one of Europe’s most important Gothic buildings, and the seat of papal power from 1309-1377.
Visit the Cathedral Notre Dame des Doms and admire the gilded statue of the Virgin Mary that stands austerely on top of its tower.
Spend the rest of the day wandering the narrow cobblestone alleys of Old Avignon, where the ancient character of the place comes alive.
You will be dropped back at your hotel in Marseille or the dockside of your cruise ship at the end of the tour.
