  • The hutongs are 700-years old and date back to the Ming and Yuan dynasties
  • The leisurely pace of the jinrikisha makes it ideal for exploring the narrow alleys of old Beijing

There is no better way to get a feel of ‘Old’ Beijing than to travel in a ‘jinrikisha’ through the narrow charismatic alleys called hutongs, some dating as far back as the 13th century.

A hutong is an ancient city alley or lane typical in Beijing, where hutongs run into the several thousand. Surrounding the Forbidden City, many were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.

This 700-year old neighborhood of Old Beijing with labyrinth-like narrow streets seems to be caught in a time warp. See it via your own personal rickshaw driver and make several stops along the river, at the vegetable market, and even visit somebody’s house.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned coach and taken to the Old District in Beijing for a sightseeing tour of the hutongs in a jinrikisha, also known as pedicabs. An English-speaking tour guide will accompany you on this tour.

On arrival at the Old District, board your jinrikisha, and explore this part of Beijing.

This maze of narrow alleyways winding around the Forbidden City is fast disappearing, and you’ll get a glimpse into the distinctive Chinese culture as you zigzag through the hutongs. You’ll also visit the home of a real Chinese family and climb to the top of an old drum tower for a bird’s eye view of the area. There is even a stop for refreshments at a local teahouse.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Beijing.
