Finish your day with an exhilarating ride on the Skyrail. Glide smoothly in a gondola over the top of the rainforest canopy and get bird’s-eye views of this unsurpassed natural wonder.
At the start of your Rainforestation Nature Park Experience from Cairns you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the station to board the Kuranda Scenic Railway at 0830h (08:30am).
You have about 1 hour and 45 minutes to enjoy a picturesque ride on this magnificent railway. Forged through mountains and jungle this rail track is a phenomenal feat of engineering. The railway was built in the 1890s in response to pleas from tin miners at Herberton who were agitating for a rail link to the coast to bring supplies. As you look out at the stupendous views, reflect that much of this incredible railway was constructed not with bulldozers, jackhammers and other modern equipment, but with strategy, fortitude, hand tools, dynamite, buckets and bare hands.
You will alight at 1015h (10:15am) at Kuranda Village, a quaint township in the rainforest famous for its arts, crafts and Aboriginal artifacts. A shuttle service will pick you up at Kuranda and take you to the Rainforestation Nature Park, set in 100 acres of World Heritage Rainforest.
At 1100h (11:00am) you will board an amphibious World War II Army Duck (officially spelt DUKW) for an unforgettable 45-minute rainforest tour.
As you explore the property, your knowledgeable Duck Captain / Guide will point out and explain ferns, orchids, strangler figs and stinging trees, as well as birds such as the azure kingfisher and a host of other animals and reptiles.
When you splash into the lake, be sure to smile as an automatic digital photo is taken. These are available for purchase at the Tropical Treats Juice Bar when you disembark.
Following your Army Duck Tour, you will enjoy an introduction to Aboriginal culture. You will see the famous Pamagirri Corroboree - a delightful 30-minute show of traditional dance performance in a rainforest amphitheatre, depicting animals, food gathering, and hunting. The rainforest serves as the theatre walls while sounds of wildlife provide accompaniment to the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo and clapsticks. Be sure to watch closely – there's a surprise for the audience at the end!
After the dance show, you can enjoy the Pamagirri Dreamtime Walk. This 30-minute guided tour along an all weather walk-way modelled on the Rainbow Serpent gives you fascinating insights into aspects of Aboriginal culture.
you can take time to meander through the Tropical Fruits Orchard, which features over 40 different species of exotic tropical fruit trees. This tranquil setting provides the perfect opportunity to view and learn about fruits of the region including jackfruit, paw paw, lychees, mango, cocoa, carambola, star apple, and pineapple, as well as regional produce such as tea, coffee, and sugar cane.
You can also wander at your leisure around the nature reserve or join a guided group with an experienced Wildlife Keeper. Covered boardwalks provide excellent viewing of native Australian animals, including crocodiles, wombats, dingoes, snakes, lizards, and the cassowary. Visit the ever-popular Koala Wildlife Park. See the adorable koalas and hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies.
At 1430h (02:30pm) you will be picked up in a coach and taken to the terminal for the Skyrail at Kuranda. Board a gondola for a 7.5 km journey over the top of the rainforest back to Cairns. Gliding just metres above the tops of the trees in comfortable six-person gondola cabins, the Skyrail experience reveals one of the most botanically fascinating and diverse habitats on earth.
After you disembark from the Skyrail you will be picked up and dropped off at your accommodation.
