For your delightful Petropolis – The Imperial City – Tour from Rio you will be picked up from your hotel (or the cruise port) in a comfortable air-conditioned coach. An English-speaking guide will accompany you on the excursion.
You will be driven about 60 km (36 miles) into the forested hills that surround the town of Petropolis. The city is named after Pedro II, Brazil’s second emperor. It was the summer residence of the Brazilian emperors and nobles in the 19th century and the official capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro between 1894 and 1903.
Your tour starts with a visit to the Imperial Museum, an elegant neoclassical building that was once the summer palace of Emperor Pedro II. Here you will see displays of the Imperial furniture, paintings, historic documents, and weapons. You will also see the jewelled scepter and the spectacular 18 carat gold crown set with 596 precious stones and 80 pearls. Magnificent carriages used by the Emperor’s family are also on show, housed in a special pavilion adjacent to the main building.
The tour continues with a visit to the fine Gothic Cathedral of Saint Peter of Alcântara. Here you will find the tombs of Emperor Pedro II and his wife as well as his daughter Princess Isabel, who earned a place in Brazilian history by abolishing slavery.
You will also see the glass and metal Crystal Palace, built in France and transported to Brazil to house exhibitions and social events promoted by Princess Isabel.
Lunch is not included in your tour but there will be plenty of places in town where you can catch bite to eat.
At the end of the tour you will be driven back to Rio and dropped back at the starting point.
