Itinerary

0830h (08:30am): At the start of your exciting Rivers’ Expedition from Manaus, you will be picked up from your hotel reception and driven in a car to the docks at Manaus.

0900h (09:00am): Accompanied by your English-speaking guide, you will board your motor boat for your cruise to Lake Janauary. As you slip along, look out for caimans (alligators) in the water, monkeys in the trees and capybara families along the banks. Keep binoculars at the ready to check out the different birds including kingfishers, herons, egrets and parrots.

You will also see the huts of the 'ribeirinhos', riverside communities, clustered along the banks.

After about an hour and a half you should reach the 'meeting of the waters'. This extraordinary phenomenon is where the milky-coffee colored waters of the Solimões River meet the black-coffee colored Rio Negro waters and flow side by side for about 6 miles without intermingling. The different densities of the waters prevent them mixing. When the waters finally merge they form the great River Amazon.

1100h (11:00am): At Lake Janauary, you'll transfer into motorized canoes, to journey deeper into the narrow overgrown tributaries known as 'igarapes'. You will see the enormous water-lilies known as Victoria amazonica. Found only in the Amazon, these amazing plants have floating leaves up to 2m (6.5ft) in diameter.

If you are lucky, you may get also get a chance to see the playful river dolphins. There are two types – the gray and the rare pink dolphin. Pink dolphins are now sadly endangered by environmental damage in the Amazon region.

1300h (01:00pm): At lunch-time, you will have a regional fish lunch (with vegetarian option), Menu will include some of the following: fish, rice, spaghetti, potatoes, vegetables, (including vegetarian options) and the chance to go fishing for the notorious piranhas. Piranhas may be small but their teeth are very sharp and they bite like crazy!

1700h (05:00pm): After your fishing experience, it will be time to head back to Manaus, arriving late afternoon. At the docks, you will be met by a vehicle that will drop you off at your hotel.
