Itinerary

To start your Montserrat Day Trip with Cog Wheel Train Ride, you will board a bus from Barcelona to the mountain of Montserrat located 4,051 feet above sea level, which is home to incredible Benedictine Abbey – Santa Maria de Montserrat. The undulating topography along with a monastery and hermit caves, makes it a favourite tourist spot.

With this tour, you will board a cog wheel train to reach the monastery Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, an important pilgrimage site in Catalonia. During the course of your 15 minute journey, enjoy picturesque views of the beautiful multi-peaked mountain. The trains are air-conditioned and wheelchair-friendly.

The rocks of Montserrat formed by natural cement of sand during the centuries affected by the wind and rain, give the mountains strange and varied forms. Some of the peaks and sites have been named after human or animal shapes, as imagined by the locals. There are also several legends surrounding the mountains and how it came into being.

Your Bi-lingual guide, fluent in English and Spanish, will share notes about the history and myths of the city and the monastery.

Visit the Royal Basilica of Montserrat, known for the 12th century Romanesque carving of Virgin Moraneta, also called the Black Virgin. She is considered to be the patron saint of Catalonia, who is enshrined in the monastery's Royal Basilica. You will have enough time to go around the basilica and take in the spiritual atmosphere of the place.

You will also visit the Espai Audiovisual Montserrat, the new audiovisual room in Montserrat which reflects the monastery’s will to respond and offer notes to the thousands of visitors and pilgrims who are interested in learning about Montserrat and its significance. The exhibition is based on three fundamental pillars: mountain, monastery and sanctuary.
