The most famous of all Gaudi’s designs is undoubtedly the Sagrada Familia. Gaudi started work on his final masterpiece in 1882 and continued work until his death. Gaudi’s intention when designing the Sagrada Famila was to create a church which was representative of the people of Barcelona. After Gaudi’s death a combination of other architects have continued to work on the Sagrada Familia and the final completion date is scheduled for 2026. Despite the fact that it is incomplete the Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Barcelona and is for many the pinnacle of Barcelona architecture.

While the Sagrada Familia may be the most famous example of Gaudi architecture in Barcelona; his genius can be found all over the city. Be sure to spend an afternoon relaxing in Parc Guell, a peaceful park which overlooks the city and is scattered with Gaudi sculptures. And make sure you wander past the Casa Mila (also known as La Pedrera); if the Sagrada Familia is the finest example of Gaudi’s Barcelona architecture then Casa Mila is the most unique. This apartment complex, commissioned by a rich patron of the city is unique for having no straight lines and must be seen to be believed.

AThe controversial Barcelona Forum is strikingly modern glass structure considered by many to be an indication of new Barcelona architecture. Visible from across the city the Montjuic Tower is a distinctive tower built to transmit the footage of the Barcelona Olympics around the world, the design is meant to replicate an athlete running with the Olympic flame.

Dominated by Spain’s tallest towers (one of which is now a wonderful hotel) and surrounding the spectacular Olympic Stadium the village represents the Catalan love for design and the modern side of Barcelona architecture.
