Highlights

  • See the ghostly remains of an old female prison
  • Take in the beautiful setting of a Hobart from atop an awe-inspiring mountain

Overview

Journey to Hobart’s most staggering overlook at the summit of Mount Wellington.

This enchanted mountain is ornamented by parasols of fronds and majestic oaks.

Mt. Wellington’s commanding vista is a photographer’s dream, with unrivaled views of Hobart, its outlying settlements, and the verdant Derwent estuary.

You’ll also drive through the historic waterfront district of Battery Point and see the remains of a female prison, built during Hobart’s early days as a penal colony.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from Gray Line Terminal, Brooke Street Pier or your Hobart hotel (subject to availability) by air-conditioned coach for this Mount Wellington panoramas tour. There will be English narrated commentary on board.

Drive through Battery Point, an old port and maritime village with a charming collection of historic houses, lively pubs, and fashionable boutiques. There will be a photo stop here.

Catch a passing glimpse of early Hobart homes in South Hobart.

Make the climb to the Mount Wellington Summit, a harsh, rocky vista that affords unsurpassed views of Hobart and the surrounding area on clear days.

Crowned by alpine vegetation and glazed by snow in winter, Mt. Wellington rises more than 1200 meters above Hobart, and is known to locals simply as “the mountain.”

There is evidence that Mount Wellington has been inhabited for more than 30,000 years, and the biologist Charles Darwin wrote of its “noble forest” and flourishing tree ferns in his landmark book, “The Voyage of the Beagle.” Witness the panoramic spectacle of Hobart, the surrounding suburbs, and the expansive waterways that have been the lifeblood of the area for thousands of years.

On the return trip, visit the remains of the Female Factory, a one-time female prison that bespeaks Hobart’s eerie past as a penal colony.

Your tour will end where it began.
