Activity Overview

Spend two days exploring Kakadu National Park on this tour departing from Darwin. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park offers great scenic beauty and a variety of flora and fauna. About one third of Australia's bird species are represented in the Kakadu National Park. There are at least 60 species of birds found in the wetlands. Whistling ducks and Magpie geese are the most abundant.

Cruise along in the famous yellow water billabong past forest teeming with paperbark, pandanus, mangroves and exotic tropical trees, explore ancient Aboriginal art sites, stroll through monsoon rainforests, swim below cascading waterfalls and experience a beautiful, unspoiled wilderness on this tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Darwin - Kakadu National Park

You will be picked up from your hotel in Darwin and will travel in an air-conditioned vehicle accompanied by an English-speaking guide. Turning off the Stuart Highway, you will travel along the Arnhem Highway passing the major river systems and wetland regions into Kakadu National Park which is Australia’s largest national park. The park offers great ecological and biological diversity which partly explains why it is so popular with visitors.

After crossing the South Alligator River, you will explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr Rock where you will climb up the rock which has amazing ancient Aborigine art on it.

There will be a break for lunch at a suitable place and time.

You will then visit the Bowali Centre and see displays that will tell you more about the history of the Aborigines. See examples of Aboriginal art and craft. Continue to Cooinda to join Kakadu’s fabled Yellow Waters Wetland Cruise to experience the beauty of the Kakadu wetlands. Yellow Water Billabong is located at the end of Jim Jim Creek, a tributary of the South Alligator River. The South Alligator river system has extensive wetlands that include river channels, floodplains and backwater swamps.

Proceed to Gagudju Lodge Cooinda where you will stay the night. The lodge has 48 air-conditioned lodge rooms, budget accomodation in air-conditioned twin share budget rooms, shady powered and unpowered campsites, two quality restuarants, lagoon pool and spa, kids playground, tour desk, fuel station, internet kiosk, general store, airstrip, public telephones and recently installed CDMA mobile coverage.

Enjoy dinner (payable direct) and spend the night at the lodge.

Day 2: Kakadu National Park - Darwin

After a continental breakfast, proceed in your air-conditioned vehicle to Nourlangie Rock region which is famous for stunning rock art galleries. Continue to the Anbangbang Billabong and see spectacular views of the Arnhem Land Escarpment ancient Aboriginal occupation sites and pristine freshwater environments.

There will be a break for lunch.

Continue off the beaten track to Barramundi Gorge where a 2 kilometre return walk through paperbark forest leads to a small waterfall and clear plunge pool. You will have the opportunity to swim here. The walk is graded moderate though you will need some skill to negotiate the slightly difficult patches.

Later in the afternoon, you will leave Kakadu National Park, briefly stopping at Jabiru Township for an evening snack (payable direct) at the Bark Hut Inn.

You will arrive at Darwin in mid evening and will be dropped off at your hotel where the tour ends.
