Born in 1919 to a poor family, Eva Duarte (‘Evita’) was a film and radio actress who married rising politician Juan Perón and came to wield considerable power herself within the volatile Argentinean political scene. By acting as a champion of the poor she became loved and venerated by the common people. Her untimely death of cancer in her early 30s was greeted with an unprecedented outpouring of national grief. Eva Perón has become a part of international popular culture, most famously as the subject of the musical ‘Evita’.
This tour visits various key places where her work was carried out. These include:
CGT Building (General Confederation of Labor): Eva took on the task of gathering the support of the working classes and controlling organized labor groups. She became closely involved with the work of the General Confederation of Labor, the chief labor organization in Argentina. Although not given an official title, she acted as the secretary of labor, supporting workers' demands for higher wages and introducing various social welfare measures.
Mayo Avenue: (Avenida de Mayo) Famous for Evita’s elaborate funeral procession, when thousands of people waited days to see her casket.
The Balcony at Rosada Palace: Here, in her heyday, Evita addressed the adoring crowds.
The Labor Ministry: Eva’s husband Juan Peron served as Labor Minister and, with Eva’s encouragement, gained strong support from the workers and poor of the nation.
Our Lady of the Pillar Church and Recoleta Cemetery: Here Eva Peron is buried and there are always fresh flowers on the grave.
The National Library Building : The main building of Argentina’s largest library stands on the site of the Unzué Palace, the official residence of President Juan Peron and Evita. The Unzué Palace was demolished in 1958 by Peron’s opponents.
Evita Museum: In this grand mansion you will find an impressive array of Evita memorabilia including dresses, film clips from her movies, news clips and samples of toys, clothes and books distributed to the poor by her Foundation.
At the end of the tour you will be dropped back at the point where you were picked up.
