Overview

Explore Jordan’s ancient town of Jerash on this tour and marvel at its breathtakingly well-preserved Roman ruins. Jerash, located 48 kilometres north of Amman and nestled in a quiet valley among the mountains of Gilead, is one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside Italy. Known as the ‘Pompeii of the East’, artifacts and buildings dating back to the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods can be seen in its paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, handsome theaters, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates.

This ancient city also has a rare distinction of an unbroken chain of human occupation, dating back to more than 6,500 years! Hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years, Jerash is a must-visit during your trip to Jordan.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned car/mini van and taken on a city sightseeing tour of Jerash.

The drive to Jerash will take you less than an hour, but will transport you 2000 years back in time! See some of the finest preserved Roman architecture outside Italy. At Jerash, a local English-speaking guide will accompany you on this tour.

As you enter the city through the South Gate, you become aware of its size and the grandness of its monuments. On your left is the Temple of Zeus, and ahead is the Oval Plaza, an oval-shaped forum.

From the forum you can see a colonnaded street stretch out to the North Gate. Continue your way down through this Street of Columns until you reach the Arch of Triumph, built in honor of Emperor Hadrian in 129 AD.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back to your hotel in Petra.
