Evora is located in the Alto Alentejo Province, an area that is full of cork and olive trees and whitewashed villages. Among the Ancient Roman Landmarks of this 2000-year-old city that you will visit are:

Temple of Diana: The ruins of this Roman Temple dating back to the 2nd century is very popular with tourists. It is one of the Iberian Peninsula's best preserved Roman monuments.

Cathedral: This Romanesque Gothic cathedral is one of the oldest and most important monuments in Evora and has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bones Chapel: Its beautifully decorated ceiling is supported by many substantial columns and the walls of the room are constructed with human skulls and bones. Many of the skulls have been gilded so that the overall appearance is rather warm and elegant in a ghoulish sort of way. As a final macabre touch, the complete gilded skeleton of a monk hangs from a hook on the side wall.

The University of Évora: It was founded in 1559 and is the second oldest university in Portugal. It has elegant Renaissance marble cloisters and the classroom entrances are decorated with tile panels representing each of the subjects taught.

Drive back to Lisbon with a stop at the picturesque seaside village of Setúbal.
