Welcome to El Calafate a small town of pitched rooftops and wild rose bushes and home to some of the most incredible glaciers in the world. Situated at the shore of the Argentina Lake, this charming town is the gateway to the famed Perito Moreno and Upsala Glaciers. The journey from El Calafate to the Perito Moreno Glacier, covering almost 80 kilometres, is a wonderful experience in itself. As soon as you leave El Calafate, the vast expanse of Argentina Lake with its rounded bay, offers a breathtaking view. The shores of the Argentina Lake are home to varied species of birds like black neck swam, flamingo, steam duck, gallareta and cauqun. The first 50 kilometres of your journey will take you through the yellow countryside before entering the Los Glaciares National Park. Your journey will culminate in the spectacular sight of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Walk the solid river of ice, and a feeling of pure euphoria sweeps over you. Treading on the glacial ice, enjoy watching the glacier peaks and the blue coloured lagoons all around you. If you stick to the footbridges, you can feast your eyes on the numerous ice formations cracks, seracs, sumideros and small lakes! Take along an experienced tour guide, and learn about the flora and fauna, glaciological features, and the unique glacier-breaking phenomenon. For an adventurous twist to the trip, you could set out on the mini trek to the glacier. At Bajo las Sombras Bay, you can take a boat and navigate the Rico Lake, sailing across the glacier front. The huge walls of the Perito Moreno Glacier are an overpowering sight. If Perito Moreno left you awestruck, get ready for another equally amazing experience - Upsala glacier. A short ride from El Calafate will bring you to the port of Punta Bandera, from where you board a catamaran and sail the northern side of the Argentina Lake. Cruising along the still waters of the lake, you will encounter impressive icebergs and a marvellous view! After a satisfying day spent amongst natural ice wonders, the night at El Calafate is warm and inviting. You can choose between the various pizza parlours and steak houses to satisfy your taste buds. Relax at a club or boogie the night away at the discotheques. Long after you leave the icy walks of the glaciers, the white magic of these spectacular glaciers will continue to mesmerize you.
